On how to build or adept tools for web-publishing so they take privacy into consideration by design.

This talk is about the conflict that can arise between getting your
message out there, and trying to maintain your audience's right to
privacy. In the last couple of years, with the dramatic increase in the
use of social media, often one of the most effective ways of spreading
your message to a large group of people has become to foster a community
using existing social networks, like Facebook or Twitter.

The problem with using these services is that, while convenient, they
also snoop on your audience’s private data. These companies make their
money by creating and selling detailed profiles to marketers, so that
they can effectively target their ads. Often these services run their
own ad service as well, as is the case with Facebook and Google. Later
on, this data can come back to hunt you. Let’s say you’ve been searching
on Google for some serious illness or disease. You can imagine what your
health insurance company would do, had it access to this information. Up
the premiums or deny you insurance altogether.

Sander Venema was asked by Annie Machon to redesign her website in early
2012. We took special care in avoiding common traps that can compromise
the security and privacy of the site’s visitors when designing the new
site.

In his talk, Sander will talk about the special considerations that
come with building websites for whistleblowers with high security &
privacy needs, both for the owner/operator, and the visitors of the
site; discuss what the problem points are, and how we worked around
them to create a website that is both pretty, usable and as safe as
possible. He will also talk about domain security and governments
claiming jurisdiction over a domain name, even if the actual server is
not located in their country and the site isn’t aimed specifically at
their citizens. There have been several cases in the past where
websites have been brought offline because of this.

Systems design is typically done without much regard for minimisation of personal data processing, a core concept of privacy laws. In this session we'll discuss the design of a health-care portal and what pitfalls a systems architect typically encounters in this regard. We'll also explore ways of reducing the amount of personal data processed through incorporation of cryptographic methods in the systems design, but also how hard it is to get it really right.

FPGAs can combine logic gates based on a description of a logical circuit written in a HDL. VHDL is one such language. While this may sound abstract, with soft-cores FPGA's become flexible microcontrollers. The internet hosts a number of GPL or BSD licensed IP-cores to make it easy to kickstart developing your own microprocessor. This talk introduces the basic concepts (FPGA's and a cursory view of VHDL) and describes how you can customize an off-the-shelf IP core with custom hardware circuits such as encryption engines, multimedia input and output and specialized I/O.

Among available free cores are the well-known microprocessors 6502, 8088, 6800, ARM, 68000, 8085. This talk will present a very simple microprocessor core: the ZPU. The ZPU is a 32-bit stack-based microprocessor and is a great starting point if you are interested in experimenting with the inner workings of the microprocessor. It comes with a gcc toolchain to compile c into zpu object files.

The talk will also point out freely available tools to get started with VHDL, including simulation and loading a design into an FPGA. One such tool will hopefully be demonstrated, showing a complete trace of all internal signals in the ZPU microprocessor while it is executing a hello world program written in c.

With projects such as opencores, the principles of free software can be applied to hardware as well. Many of the opencores projects are wishbone compliant. Wishbone is a bus specified to promote interoperability between free IP-cores. Wishbone can be used to link I/O-controllers to the microprocessor, but it can also be used as a memory interface. The talk will introduce the wishbone bus and it's various read/write cycles. Wishbone promotes reuse of modules.

Touch screens bring amazing new features, like swiping and... well, that's about it. Anyway, I don't really care. The only really functional method for text entry is still the physical keyboard. Even though they all look roughly the same, there are many variables. Especially if you spend a large part of your life using a keyboard, you should be aware of the options you have.

With my Dvorak training course, everyone* can learn to touch type the entire alphabet within ten hours. Many nerds have even done the entire course in less than five. There will be a few keyboards for those who can't bring a laptop, but it works better if the letters you type actually do appear on a screen!

to the community and some of the vulnerabilities we found along the way.

not reaching for the same size of "real world" applications we are dreaming of.

We would like to present our project, and ideas around bulding full-size
buildings using (self build) 3 axis cnc cutters, Sheets of plywood, and code to
automatically generate all the requiered building blocks.

Bring your soldering irons, components and insights! Because we will get busy on all kinds of hardware again. Microcontrollers, retro-gear and lasercutters.

===LAOS laser-cutter project===

Also present will be the [http://www.laoslaser.org/ LAOS project]. They have been developing (open design) hardware and software to control basically any random type of laser-cutter. The open design entails it will be possible to develop open-source drivers for linux or even windows. This makes it possible to use software of your choice (eg. inkscape) instead of coreldraw or any of the other proprietary and very crappy vendor software.

During this winter event, the team from LAOS will be present with various controller boards and cutters, to further develop the software both on the controller board as well as on the controlling computer.

Saturday from 12:00 till 00:00 (and possibly also on sunday).

===Retro fixing and breaking===

There will be a bunch of retro hardware (game consoles and old home computers), part of which is probably still good to go after a little expert TLC and part of which is beyond repair and ready to be harvested and re-used. The fixed gear shall go back to the awesome retro collection, what will happen with the discarded components? Let's find something creative!

=What is Maltego?=

Maltego is an intelligence and forensics application. It allows for the mining and gathering of information as well as the representation of this information in a meaningful way.

Coupled with its graphing libraries Maltego allows us to identify previously unknown relationships between information, persons and information about persons. As such, it is a useful tool in the IT security field to map an organization's people and relationships. A valuable aid in exploring the social-engineering attack vector in pen-testing investigations.

=Hackathon=

The purpose of this hackathon is to create local transforms. Maltego defines various entity types (such as persons, domain names, phone numbers, etc..). Transforms are applications that when called will produce output which results in new entities that are somehow linked to the originating entity within your graph. They can be coded in practically anything as long as they stick to the specification (ie. they output the right kind of XML). These transforms will be open source and released to the community, and can be run locally without the need to contact a server.

Wintersport can be expensive if you want to. But we managed to go all-in (transport, apartment, good food, ski-passes) for less then € 500,- per person. For one week of wintersport.

Invite some friends over for a nice meal, have them bring an external 1TB hard-drive each and hook them up to your Terabyte Dinner Device. Enjoy the food and the company, and when the evening ends each of you will have at least 750GB of new content, software or literature. All in crisp digital quality. And without leaving a trace that might implicate you for committing the horrendous crime of exchanging information.

At the eth0 summer event in August 2010 participants are invited to built their own TBDD, after which the first terabyte dinners may take place right there and then! Some of the more important design goals: easy to use (even your grandmother should be able to organise a terabyte dinner), using off-the-shelf components, easy to assemble, low energy consumption for terabyte picknicks in the park and a small form factor for maximum portability.

The [http://scherpenisse.net/project/527/tinyvga TinyVGA project by Arjan Scherpenisse] is an attempt to decipher the way VGA is used to generate images on computer monitors. The result is the TinyVGA board, which is easy to make and can be plugged in to almost any VGA monitor or projector to generate a 32x20 pixel image with just a handful of components, a 2cm x 3cm pcb and a 9 volts battery.

You don't have to posess any knowledge about electronics or have soldering skills. All the basics will be explained, and you will learn how to use a soldering iron without burning yourself, your friends or your electronics.

=Cost=

A small additional cost will be involved for the parts and the PCB: for EUR 15,- you will be able to build and take home your own signal generator. Tools and parts will be provided, so all you will have to bring are the 15 euros, your hands and a small part of your brain. Oh, and you might want to prepare a 32 x 20 pixel monochrome image !
